Charleen Olivia Hendry passed away on Nov. 19, 2011. She was 73 years old. She was a resident of Eureka.
A life-long resident of California, Charleen was born on Aug. 24, 1938, in Long Beach to Taylor and Alice Jackman. She was raised in Lynwood and graduated from Lynwood High School in 1956. Charleen was very involved with Job's Daughters and was named Southern California De Molay Sweetheart. She attended Compton Jr. College and then Cal State Long Beach, where she graduated in 1960. While attending Long Beach State she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority and was voted Long Beach State's Lotta Crabtree. Charleen earned her BA in Education and began her teaching career immediately. She later received her MA in Education from the University of San Francisco. While attending Long Beach State she met her husband Carl Dan Swanson. They had three children; Bob, Cheryl, and Mark. Charleen began her teaching career in Long Beach. She was a kindergarten teacher at Kennedy Elementary School. She took some time off to raise her young children and then returned to teaching for many years to follow. She was a kindergarten teacher at Whittman Elementary School in Cerritos until she relocated to Humboldt County in 1979. Charleen married Russ Bradford in 1981 in Eureka. He passed away in 1994. Charleen became a volunteer for Hospice in Eureka for some years to follow.
Charleen was a kindergarten teacher at Hydesville School from 1980 until she retired in 2008. At Hydesville School she met principal, friend, and later to become, husband Jim Hendry. She enjoyed working with Jim even after her retirement. Charleen was a life-long educator. The classroom was her perfect place.
Charleen loved to spend her retirement years visiting her children and grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as "Eme." She loved gardening, spending time at her cabin at Ruth Lake, and being a docent at Grizzley Creek State Park. She enjoyed her many visits to the Hendry home in Rhode Island. She also loved her visits to New England, Cozumel Mexico, Europe, various scuba diving locations, and traveling in her 5th wheel trailer with her husband Jim. Her friends were dear to her and she treasured each and every one!
Charleen is survived by her husband Jim; her son Bob Swanson and his wife Diane, along with their children Jordan, Mackenzie, and Sydney of Elk Grove; her daughter Cheryl Yeaton and her husband Scott of Long Beach along with their children Allison and Natalie Breyer; and her son Mark Swanson of Little Rock, Ark., and his children Alexandria and Brock. She is also survived by Jim's children Beth and Bret Hendry of Eureka, and Russ' children, Brenda Nelson and her husband Jeff, along with their children Caleb Anna of Corning, and Debbie Bradford along with her children Julia and Jack of Ben Lomond. Charleen also leaves her many caring neighbors and dear friends. Charleen was preceded in death by her parents Dr. Taylor and Alice Jackman.
Friends are invited to attend her memorial service on Saturday, Dec. 17 at Hydesville Community Church, Highway 36 and Rohnerville Road, Hydesville at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Michael Delamarian officiating. A private family interment will be at Sunset Cemetery in Eureka.
