According to Scott Downie, Senior Biologist Supervisor with the Calif. Department of Fish and Game in Fortuna, fish counts regularly listed in the Beacon include only fish that go over the VAFS fishway with only a fraction of the system upstream; in fact less than 1 percent.
"However, due to the flow not being in sync with the many tributaries, it is abnormally high in the early part of the run for that percentage of the system," Downie said. "We have been counting there since 1921," he said.
The South Fork of the Eel River is the most productive of the various parts of the system, and has likely always been so, Downie said. "We started doing coho population estimates last year in the South Fork the first time since 1976 when counts at Benbow Dam ceased due to modifications to the dam and ladder."
