Fortuna residents and husband and wife Tim Brennan and Julie Wright were two of the nearly 80 people who took advantage of low cost flu shots at the Annual Eel River Valley Family Health and Resource Fair, held last weekend.
The event was held at the Rohner Park Fireman's Pavilion, in conjunction with Fortuna's city-wide celebration of the Apple Harvest Festival.
The Health Fair included information on the latest treatments and technologies at Redwood Memorial and St. Joseph Hospitals, including cardiac, cancer, surgery, and rehab, kids' health and health insurance, nutrition, fitness, and more. Hospital representatives estimate that between 600 and 700 people attended the conveniently located, free event.
"Our annual health and resource fairs provide an excellent opportunity for our Health System staff and out community partners to come together in one location to help support the healthiest communities here on the North Coast," said Health Fair Coordinator Brian Olson. "As our economy slowly struggles to recover from the recession, free and low cost health screenings and easy access to information and resources is now more important than ever to the health of our community."
Blood draws were not available for the public at the event, but nearly 300 low cost blood draw coupons were handed out. These coupons can be redeemed between now and December 2nd at Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna. The $50 cost to the person redeeming the coupon will include a health profile which consists of a Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP), a lipid panel, and a hemogram. Test results will include cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, sodium, potassium levels, and more. This low cost blood draw will help the person learn more about their health, detect a potential problem, and perhaps encourage a change in personal habits.
Other testing available at the Health Fair was bone density scans, fingerstick testing for glucose, cholesterol, and hemoglobin, and blood pressure checks.
In all, more than 35 groups and individuals distributed health-related information at the Eel River Valley Family Health and Resource Fair.
