Wrap-up of Summer Special Olympics games; Fall schedule begins

Summer Games came to a close for Humboldt County Special Olympics athletes, with a Softball tournament held at Redwood Fields, coached by Ken Musante. The bocce tournament was held at Larson Park, coached by Gene Senestraro, and the Aquatic team competed in the Summer Games at UC Davis.

The Aquatic team brought home 16 Gold Medals; 3 Silver Medals and 6 Bronze medals. Traveling team members were: Linda Blankenship, Ashley Gorge, Eric Malone, Shane McCarthy, Eric Metcalf, Randall Mielke, Tawny Morgan, Nate Prince and Clara Tordoff. Nate Prince was selected to represent all of the Athletes in Northern California and Nevada, in the torch run. Rita Moore coached the Aquatics team.

Humboldt Special Olympics, Bocce and Softball will be qualified to compete in regional tournaments and state tournaments in 2012.

Fall Bowling began on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Harbor Lanes in Eureka, but there will be no bowling on Oct. 1. Bowling will resume every Saturday from Oct. 8 through Saturday, Nov. 12. For details, call Coach Teresa Mello at 839-3929.

Humboldt Special Olympics is bringing back soccer. Soccer will be held at the Pacific Union Fields in Arcata beginning Oct. 1 at 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. For details, call Coach Alejandro Virrueta at 826-1346 or Coach Ken Musante at 601-7656.

All Athletes must have a current medical and release form on file. Special Olympics is free to all ages, 5 years and older.
