Souls of Mischief are living up to their proclamation when they first stepped on the major-undergroud hip-hop scene.
It's been 15 years since they dropped “'93 'Til Infinity” in, well, 1993.
Fifteen years is a healthy musical career for anyone. I mean the Beatles only lasted 10 years or so.
That album charted in the Top 100 for Billboard's 200 that year and in 1998 The Source Magazine named it as one of the Top 100 Rap Albums.
Since then, A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai have released three other records both as their own crew and part of the Hieroglyphics.
Also on the bill is one of the pioneers of the independent hip-hop movement in California, Myka 9.
His name has been associated with some of the most innovative hip-hop projects since the genre was in its infancy here out west: MC Aces, Freestyle Fellowship and Haiku D'Etat to name a few.
His style sounds like a modern inclination of Eugene McDaniels. Not the “A Hundred Pounds of Clay”-era Eugene McDaniels, but the “Headless Heroes of the Apacolypse” -era Eugene McDaniels.
Now some may ask why a hip-hop crew from Oakland and an MC from LA are headlining a “Homegrown Hip-Hop”show. Well the Mateel bills the show as “a twice annual celebration of the best in Cali-based conscious hip hop,” but that doesn't mean the show will be void of Humboldt County representation.
Subliminal Sabotage gets to play in their own backyard, with their live band hip-hop experience, and J the Sarge will be one of the first to kick it off.
Also scheduled to play is Whosane and Onetribe.
DJ Just One and DJ Elements will be spinning and MC 2Son will be, well, emceeing the event.
Doors open at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Mateel Community Center and music goes until 1 a.m. Tickets can be purchased at the local outlets or online at www.inticketing.com . Tickets are $20 in advance. MCC members and teens receive a $2 discount when purchased in advance at the Mateel office in Redway. Tickets are $25 at the door. Snack foods and desserts will be available to benefit the Mateel Meal and a bar will be upstairs. For more information contact the Mateel Community Center at 923-3368 or visit either www.mateel.org or www.myspace.com/mateelcc
