Randy Cordeiro AKA Surreal Neil has come a long way from being born and raised in Scotia. Cordeiro is the lead singer for the band Super Diamond, which has been performing concerts all over the United States since 1993.
Super Diamond is a Neil Diamond tribute band and will be performing in Eureka this weekend at a benefit concert for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The concert will be held at the Eureka Theater on Saturday. The proceeds from the concert, sponsored by the American Cancer Society and Suddenlink, will be donated to the annual Relay for Life event.
Cordeiro is not the only former Humboldt County resident in the band. Super Diamond, keyboard player James Terris was raised in the Eel River Valley towns of Loleta and Fortuna.
Cordeiro began his musical career in 8th grade, when he and a couple of classmates played their first two shows in Scotia's historic Winema Theater. After graduating from Fortuna High School, Cordeiro moved to Phoenix, Ariz., to go to college. He continued playing music, including several Neil Diamond songs in his performances. The first performance of Super Diamond was more than 20 years ago at The Paradise Lounge in San Francisco.
Terris joined Super Diamond in 1994. As a teenager, Terris had a band called PG-75 and practice was held in the garage at his Loleta home. The band played mostly '80s music. Terris moved back to Humboldt County after the apartment he was living in was destroyed when the Northridge earthquake struck. That is when Cordeiro contacted Terris and asked him to join Super Diamond.
Cordeiro said Super Diamond performs Neil Diamond's power ballads and up-tempo hits with unrestrained enthusiasm.
”Every Super Diamond show is pure entertainment,” he said. “Classic music combined with fun, energy, and passion ... creating nostalgia for the good old days and excitement for today's generation.”
On two separate occasions, the “real” Neil Diamond has joined Super Diamond on stage to sing songs. The first time was in December of 2000 at the House of Blues in Hollywood. The second time was about one year later when Super Diamond was playing at the premier party for the movie “Saving Silverman,” which included a cameo appearance by Neil Diamond.
Cordeiro and wife Kristin currently live in San Francisco, and Terris and his wife Kitu live in Petaluma. When not touring, both make it home on occasion to visit their parents; Codeiro's parents live in Fortuna and Terris' parents live in Eureka.
