As the Humboldt County Fair readied for the 2013 season, many projects had to be completed to accommodate the attractions, visitors, animals, and overall maintenance of the grounds with the support of their landlords the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors.
It has been a long standing tradition to host Humboldt County Fair VIPs on the grounds where the Board of Directors meets. The boardroom has been in the same condition for many years, and board member Jeff Farley with the support of the board and General Manager Richard Conway, decided to renovate the room to accommodate the increased number of sponsors.
Vern Petersen of the HCF said, “Initially the room was in need of repairs for roof leaks, dry rot, termites, and rotten flooring. Once the board knew they were working on it they decided to remodel to accommodate the increase in Fair sponsors and make the space more usable.”
Many local businesses stepped up to make the improvements to the VIP Board Room to help support the increased need for space due to high sponsor numbers. Outside of the fair, Joe Buccola Construction, McKinleyville Home and Garden Center, Leonardo Logging, Cory Nunes Construction, Redwood Empire Roofing, Travis Chittenden Granite, Cocoa Cola Company of Eureka, Vern's Furniture, Johnny Wise Flooring, and Humboldt Beer Distributors all contributed to the expansion.
Those guests in the VIP room enjoyed watching the local and out of area races on the large-screen TV while enjoying catered food by CC Market and beverages provided by the Humboldt County Fair Association.
Several other projects ideas were organized by the HCF, including the judging pavilion, which needed a new roof and was provided by Cory Nunes Construction with support from the HCFA and community sponsorships.
General Manager Richard Conway provided gutter and downspouts repairs while the Ferndale Jockey's Club and Dave Mogni worked on the Winner's Circle.
Well-known and used buildings Hindley Hall and Belotti Hall received a much-needed painting face lift which was provided by the HCF maintenance crew, volunteers and Lewis Painting.
Conway had his hands in things again with Schmidbauer Lumber Company providing supplies to do stall repairs in A through F barns.
HCF is very grateful to the many sponsors, volunteers, community support, and Friends of the Humboldt County Fair who made so many projects possible. Overall the Board and Conway feel the Fair was 'a great success' and plan to continue the improvements over the years to come.
