Volunteers are needed to make a difference in the lives of older adults in Fortuna. The Humboldt Senior Resource Center's Fortuna Lunch Site is again in need of drivers to deliver nutritional well-balanced meals to home-bound seniors.
”We currently have ten drivers, but need two more,” said Fortuna Site Coordinator Launa Salsbery. “Most drivers deliver one day a week (Monday through Thursday) around 11 a.m. or noon.”
Four days a week, 24 Fortuna seniors have meals delivered to them. Along with their hot meal delivered on Thursday, they also receive a frozen meal to cook on Friday.
”This important program helps people remain independent and stay in their homes,” said Humboldt Senior Resource Center Director of Nutrition Barbara Walser.
“For many of our participants, the volunteer driver is the only person to interact with the senior during the day,” she said.
Salsbery said Fortuna has three routes for meal deliveries and each driver has six to eight seniors they visit.
Volunteers must be 18 years old or older, have a valid driver's license and reliable automobile with current insurance coverage, and be able to life 25 pounds. Some mileage reimbursement is available. More information is available by calling 725-6245 or send an email to
