Two Fortuna High School seniors will be each receiving a $1,000 college scholarship from Fortuna Redwood AutoXpo. Nolan Dinsmore and Tyler Nelson will use the financial aid to attend College of the Redwoods this coming Fall semester.

The AutoXpo Scholarship Committee received four applications and selected Dinsmore and Nelson out of that group. “They both met all the criteria,” said committee member Kent Johnson. “The main thing is they both plan to stay in the automotive field.”

Dinsmore hopes to open his own automotive shop one day. He said he got interested in the field when he helped his grandfather work on the brake system of a bulldozer. He now worked on smaller vehicles and not heavy equipment.

He has taken automotive classes all four years at Fortuna High School and is currently employed at Rocha's Automotive in Fortuna.

Nelson said his interest in automotive is a family affair, with both his dad and brother involved in the field. He is planning to study diesel mechanics and works occasionally at Rocha's Automotive and Ponci's Diesel.

The 23rd Annual Fortuna Redwood AutoXpo will take place July 26-July 28 and will include the traditional Friday evening cruise and sock hop, the Judged Car Show in downtown Fortuna on Saturday, and trophies awarded on Sunday at 10 a.m. Other activities include a Show and Shine/Vintage & Exotic car show, an artisan fair, swap meet and car corral, antique tractor and farm equipment on display, burn-out contest, and more.

More information on this year's event is available by calling 725-3916 or log on to www.redwoodautoxpo.com.
