Celebrate the first official weekend of summer tasting some fine, award-winning Humboldt County wine. This coming Memorial Day weekend, several wineries in southern Humboldt will be open to the public.

Elk Prairie Vineyards is opening their tasting room for the summer and will be pouring a couple of new release wines on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. all three days. Winery co-owner Sandy Estrada said they will be pouring new release syrah and chardonnay, as well as three or four vintages of pinot noir.

“We are also showing off our new label,” she said.

Elk Prairie Vineyards has not only redesigned the label, it is now silk-screened directly on the bottle, eliminating the use of paper labels.

”The new design is simple and clean,” Estrada said. “It is also very pretty and really nice.”

Estrada said she would be serving appetizers along with the wine sample. For the rest of the summer, the Elk prairie Vineyards tasting room will be open from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday. Elk Prairie Vineyards is located at 11544 Dyerville Loop Road. Take Elk Creek Road off the Avenue of the Giants about two miles south of Myers Flat.

Briceland Vineyards and Whitethorn Winery will also be participating in the Memorial Day wine tasting and open house plans. Both will be open to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. this coming Saturday and Sunday.

Whitethorn Winery will feature pinot noir vineyard comparisons, current releases, and barrel tastings. Wine sales at the event will include a savings of 10 percent on all bottles and 15 percent on cases. For a cover charge of $5 per person, guests will receive a commemorative Sanctuary Forest wine glass and six wine samples. Whitethorn Winery is located in the Whitethorn Construction complex at 545 Shelter Cove Road.

Briceland Vineyards is located six miles west of Redway at 5959 Briceland Road.
