Toddy Thomas Elementary School in Fortuna is holding their inaugural Pumpkin Run, a cross country meet at Rohner Park in Fortuna on Oct. 23.

In the season of heavy holiday eating and often increased sugar intake Toddy Thomas is taking an active role in promoting a healthy lifestyle. The event is open to all students in kindergarten through eighth grade throughout the county.

Toddy Thomas sent out flyers to all the schools in the County and looking forward to a positive response in this holiday running event for the local youth. Participants will receive certificates, pumpkin tokens, and cupcakes no matter what their race time, placement, or even if they walk.

Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. with a course walk at 4:15 p.m. to get a feel for the run. Kindergarten through second grade begins racing at 4:30 p.m., followed by third through fifth grade at 4:45 p.m. Sixth through eighth grade will wrap up the event at 5:30.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years with the percentage of children aged 6 to 11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7 percent in 1980 to nearly 20 percent in 2008.”

CDC reports on their webpage www.cdc.gov, “In 2008 more than one third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese.

” It is due to this increase that many school and organizations are stepping up to promote healthier lifestyles which include increased exercise and better balanced diets.
