Set to return once again to Humboldt County for some costume carousing, the downtempo psychedelic-trance duo Shpongle from the United Kingdom will headline an all-ages “Masquerade” on Thursday night at the Arcata Community Center.
”I always want to stay a day (in Humboldt) because it is so pretty and bucolic, I feel very relaxed there,” said Simon Posford (DJ/sound-engineer), also known as Hallucinogen -- one half of Shpongle. “But unfortunately I've only ever stayed a few hours before driving on to the next show. In fact on this tour I made a point of asking my management to let me have a day off after the show, but they'd already booked the next date.”
Posford and the other half of Shpongle, Raja Ram (flute/synths), who teamed up as Shpongle for the first time in 1996 are credited as having heavily influenced the psych-trance and psybient electronic sub-genres.
According to promoters World Famous Productions, the duo is “a new world of traditional sounds, acoustic guitars, Moroccan drums, Turkish operatic singing, cello, double bass, backing vocals and silver flute blended together with the computer wizardry of Simon Posford's studio production.”
Currently working on their fifth studio LP -- the follow-up to 2009's “Ineffable Mysteries from Shpongleland” -- Posford opened up a bit about the creative process behind the next record.
”Raja Ram will come to my house, we'll drink wine and
Fans can “like” the electronic duo from across the pond on Facebook (facebook.com/shpongle) to hone in on a more exact release date and title for the next LP.
According to the Shpongle website, the band takes on “a strange hybrid of electronic manipulation and shamanic midgets with frozen digits squeezing the envelope and crawling through the doors of perception.” They try to deliver a “strange world of dripping hallucinatory wallpaper (and) a garden of earthly delights.”
Advance passes for the all-ages show on Thursday can be found at The Works, People's Records, DTA and Wildberries Marketplace as well as online at worldfamous.inticketing.com. Also performing will be psych-chill dubstep star Phutureprimitive out of Portland, who alone is well worth the price of admission.
Attendees under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by a paying adult.
”Come dressed in costume, ready for fun and festivities,” Posford said.
