The racing season ended for the Sportsman class at Redwood Acres Raceway on Sept. 15 at the Larry Pries Memorial Race with Brandon Barnwell winning the 2012 Sportsman Championship. Leanne Morini substituted for her brother, Craig Perrone, who owns DelReka Distributing and was a major sponsor of Pries car and she spoke about Pries in a tribute to him. Cars lined up on the track to take a memorial lap for family members, friends and racers who passed away.
REAL STOCK: Shawn Craig driving Ryan Walters car won the Trophy Dash. Harvey Holm took the early lead in the Heat race, but Dustin Walters got past him. Craig soon got past Holm and then took over the lead for the win with Walters in second and Dax Kinsey in third. Holm took the lead in the Main Event followed by Walters, Kinsey and Craig. Holm got loose and Walters, Craig and Kinsey got past him. Craig and Walters ran side by side with Craig getting loose coming out of turn 4 and Walters nipping him at the checker for the win. Kinsey finished in third.
ROADRUNNERS: Jerry Toledo won the Trophy Dash. The first of two heat races began with cars spinning in turns 2 and 3 for a yellow flag. Steve Paiment took the lead followed by Nate Sain and Dan Hendricks driving Ryun Leazer's car. Hendricks got past Paiment and Sain followed him by, too. At the checker it was Hendricks, Sain and Paiment. In the second heat, Ken Barrett slid high in turn 2 and the pack freight trained past him.
THUNDER ROADSTER: Bruce Ziemer won the Trophy Dash. Belinda Ward took the lead in the first of two Heat races and retained it after a restart when Jim Rich spun bringing out the caution. Chris Lawrence was in second spot but Lonnie Tamboury got past him and tried to get past Belinda but got loose in turn 4. Belinda won Tamboury was second and Lawrence was third. Chris Sarvinski took the lead in the second Heat but Paul Peeples Jr. took it away. David Henderson got past Sarvinski to run in second spot and they finished in that order. Belinda took the lead in the Main and retained it after a car spun that brought out the yellow flag. Mike Ward was in second and Fergy Ferguson third but Sarvinski and Tamboury got past him and then got past Belinda. Tommy Payne and Allen Olson got past Belinda but Henderson and Peeples were on the move and got past Olson. Henderson got past Payne and then past Tamboury and got under Sarvinski to take the lead. Rich spun for another caution flag. After the restart, Payne skid high and Peeples got past him. At the checker it was Henderson, Sarvinski, Tamboury and Peeples.
SPORTSMAN: Brandon Barnwell won the Trophy Dash. Fast time was set by J.D. Frey who was in town this weekend from Morrisville, North Carolina and drove Pries car and was the only car to get into the 15 second time in this class this year with a 15.939 time. Frey drives a car on tracks much like the Acres in a car similar to the Late Model cars that run here and many fans remember Frey racing in Limited Street Stock at the Acres. Kenny Demello took the lead in the Heat race. Frey tagged Dennis DelBiaggio and he spun with the yellow coming out and DelBiaggio dashing to the pits. At the restart Demello led with Barnwell getting past Angelo Marcelli and then Frey getting past him. Frey got by Barnwell and Jimmy Walker tagged along. Frey got past Demello and Walker and Barnwell went with him. At the checker it was Frey, Walker, Barnwell and Demello. At the start of their 30-lap Main Event, Demello took the lead but Barnwell got past him. Frey spun coming into turn 4 and the yellow was out. After the restart Walker got past Demello with DelBiaggio following him past. DelBiaggio got past Walker and then Frey got past him. DelBiaggio was trying to pass Barnwell on the inside line but had to back off. Barnwell pulled away from DelBiaggio while Frey and Walker raced side by side with Walker getting the spot but Frey soon charged under Walker for third. At the checker it was Barnwell, DelBiaggio, Frey and Walker. Demello had slowed and retired to the pits for lack of brakes.
The next race is the two-day Fall Spectacular Open Show beginning on Sept. 29 and racing will start at 6 p.m. with racing also on Sept. 30 starting at 1 p.m. in the afternoon which will be last race of the season. Late Models and IMCA Modifieds will be featured. Call 442-3232 for information.
