U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopters will land in Fortuna as federal, state and local government and humanitarian organizations set up operations in the city during the first weekend of October as part of the Fortuna Police Department's Disaster Preparedness Fair, according to a press release.

Participants will present demonstrations and provide information to the community on what to do, and how to survive during and after a natural or man-made disaster. Scheduled participants include the American Red Cross, the Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Marine Corps, Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department, Eureka City Ambulance and others, according to the release.

The event will also include a fly -by and hover by a USCG Dolphin rescue helicopter from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay. The U.S. Army is scheduled to land two of its combat helicopters on the school's field. They will also set up a rock climbing wall for anyone 16 years of age and over who wants to try out their climbing skills, while the Marines will have a Humvee, and a pullup challenge for people to test their upper body strength.

Information will also be available for putting together individual and family 72-hour survival kits, food storage and preservation, water treatment, first aid, CPR, emergency gas, water and electrical shut-off, earthquake, flood and general disaster preparedness.

The Annual Fortuna Police Department's Disaster and Preparedness Fair is intended as a family event and is free of charge. It is now in its 17th year and is held in conjunction with Fortuna's Apple Harvest Festival.

This year it will take place on the grounds of South Fortuna Elementary School on the corner of Newburg Road and Fortuna Boulevard. The event will be included as one of the scheduled stops for the Apple Harvest Hayride as there will be limited parking in the immediate area. The event is scheduled to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6.
