During the recent Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale a father shared his experience with 5 year old daughter of meeting 49er starting left tackle Bubba Paris. Fortuna resident Tony Machado attended the Fair with his wife Deanna and daughter Saige as they had done every year in the past. What they did not know is a lifelong memory of meeting Bubba Paris would now be shared with his daughter.
The connection began, as it has for so many in Tony's generation, by attending the 49er training camp as a kid in Rocklin. So many Humboldt County residents have traveled the hours to share the training experiences of their favorite teams and get that coveted picture and autograph.
Whether it is the 49ers, Raiders, Giants, or some other reachable area team, the hype has always been the same. As generations have moved on to have families of their own the traditions have been carried on, but players have changed so getting to share a childhood hero with your daughter is a special treat.
As the Machado family stroll the isles of the Commercial Building they rounded a turn to find a booth with Bubba Paris greeting the public. As Tony explained to his daughter about his experience as a child the excitement grew in young Saige to share a similar experience with her beloved father. Bubba Paris is a three-time Super Bowl Champion who played nine years with the San Francisco 49ers, eight years of which as their starting left tackle. In 1982 Paris was the 49ers' first draft choice. In 1992, he moved to the Colts as a free agent. Although Paris has an extensive football career -- including a start at the University of Michigan, a Blue Bonnet Bowl Championship, three Super Bowl Championships, eight Divisional Championships, and six NFC Championships -- he reflects on those experiences to fulfill his desire to help other people have what he calls a “life changing encounter.”
Today Paris is a motivational speaker and ordained minister who traveled to the Humboldt County Fair to share his message of motivation.
