In junior varsity action, the Fortuna Huskies boys team dropped their first game of the season locally when they came up short at McKinleyville by a score of 46-42. Coleton Betts scored 18 but it was an off-night for the team.

”It's hard to be perfect, you're at someone else's gym and the calls don't go your way,” said head coach John Crotty. Bottom line, coach Crotty said, was the team just played poorly from the opening minutes.

Friday the 13th proved no issue for the JV Huskies as they responded from the loss with a vengeance and looked very sharp in their 60-40 win over the Eureka Loggers. Daniel Teasley scored 15 points, Kyle Franck contributed 14 and the team improved to a less than perfect 18-2 record for the season to date.

The Ferndale junior varsity boys continue to struggle against some tough competition. The Cats lost to league foes St. Bernard's 50-33 and Hoopa 44-28 despite the efforts of post player Trevor Earley. Earley scored 13 points at home versus Hoopa and shared top man efforts with point guard Kyle Chambers (9 points each) in the game versus the Crusaders. Just prior to our deadline, the JV Cats earned their first win in a month, 61-17 over Potter Valley. Earley scored 15, Hunter Rayl 10, Zach Rocha and Makhi Hamor each scored 8 points.

The Ferndale girls junior varsity is on a three-game winning streak and is now 2-0 in league. The Cats had away games at St. Bernard's and Hoopa and won both on the road. The St. Bernard's win was by 40-33 and the Hoopa score read 47-31. Ferndale returned home this past Tuesday evening for a non-conference game and blasted the Potter Valley Bearcats 47-9. Ferndale head coach Jamie Ellsmore stated the defense has sparked the offense and more players are getting involved with the offensive flow.

The Fortuna junior varsity girls lost their first game of the season last week at Eureka. Despite Brittany Carvalho's 18 points, the girls fell by the score of 46-38. The team rebounded this just past Tuesday evening with a win over Del Norte, more than doubling up on the Warriors, the Huskies won 50-22. Carvalho led all scorers with her 11 points and Fortuna had 11 players break into the scoring column. The Fortuna JV girls record now sits at 17-1.

The Fortuna freshman girls also hosted and beat Del Norte this past Tuesday evening. Nicole Johnson scored 19 points and Morgan Harwood added 13 points. The Frosh record now reads 11-5 on the season. The freshman boys team had an exciting 50-48 home win over Eureka last week. Fortuna forward Liam Morris topped the effort with his 14 points, guard Zach Hugh added 10 points and the Huskies improved to 7-5 on the season, 2-1 in league.

Another late score was the Fortuna Huskies varsity girls home win over Del Norte just prior to our deadline. The Huskies clobbered the Warriors 71-27 with Melissa Morrison's 14 points leading a big time offensive showing for the defensive minded Huskies. Devon Nielsen scored 13, Sophie Northern added 11 points and nine players scored in the win. The Huskies improved to 2-2 in league.
