The North Coast Chapter of California Women in Timber will be holding their annual fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds Turf Room in Eureka. The event entitled, 'Lucky Logger Casino Night' will begin at 6 p.m. and is open to the public.

There will be strolling dinner appetizers, drink specials, and unique silent and live auction items. Rex Bohn will be the auctioneer bringing a special energy to the memorable night of celebration of CWIT. There will be special signature logger drinks, including the Royal Redwood Flush and the Stump Shot, for purchase throughout the event.

California Women in Timber (CWIT) “is a grassroots group of women who have proven that involvement does make a difference.” The organization got its start in the 70s during a critical time facing the forest products industry. In 1976, those issues were taken up in Congress and at the California State Legislature with industry associations, and it became increasingly clear there was a great need for informed voices. As such, industry wives began to voice their opinions by writing letters and attending meetings, entering the debate to provide a greater picture of the true issues at hand.

”These women proved to be so effective that they chose to form the first grassroots group in support of the forest products industry and sound forest management,” says a CWIT report. The outcome was the formation of California Women in Timber which now reaches out to other WIT organizations in California, Idaho, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, South Dakota, Wyoming, and a Canadian group in British Columbia.

Locally, CWIT reaches out to local, state, and national issues. Much of their annual fundraising money goes to education in the form of scholarships and classroom education. In May, CWIT gave out 10-scholarships to high school seniors and college students ranging from $250 to $500 each.

To help fund the continued education and scholarship programs, CWIT will have their annual gun raffle, to be drawn at the Annual Dinner on Nov. 19. The raffle is for a Remington Rifle Model 700 LSS 270 WIN which includes a Leopold Scope VX-II 3-9x40, sling, and travel case. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. For raffle tickets or raffle ticket information contact Heather (Fortuna) at 498-9882 or Wendy (Eureka) at 599-7100.

CWIT would also like anyone interested in donating auction items to contact the local chapter. All donations are tax deductible and would be greatly appreciated to help support industry, education, and scholarships.
