CenterArts presents The Richard Thompson Band on Sunday, Feb. 21 at 8 p.m. in the Van Duzer Theatre, HSU. Richard Thompson is "a perennial dark-horse contender for the title of greatest living rock guitarist,” wrote Rolling Stone Magazine. Tickets are $38 and $25 for HSU students. Tickets are at the Works in Arcata and Eureka, University Ticket Office at HSU or at www.centerarts.humboldt.edu.

Richard's performance will be part of a special tour that he is doing with full band. The band will perform two full sets. The first half will be brand-new, never heard before material, and will be recorded live at the show for inclusion on Richard's upcoming CD.

This process is a rarity in today's music scene, where artists typically spend weeks or months in the studio recording new material. The second half of the show will include Richard Thompson classics from his over 40 years in the music business.

Richard Thompson, who was recently described in Rolling Stone Magazine as the “Thinking Man's Guitar God,” is among the most distinctive of guitar virtuosos, capable of breathtaking drama and sublime delicacy, depending on the song and the amp setting.

Over the course of his career, Thompson has earned numerous awards and honors, including the Ivor Novello Award for songwriting, the Orville Gibson Award for guitarists, and a spot in the Top 20 of Rolling Stone's list of all-time Guitar Greats. In 2006, he was awarded the BBC Lifetime Achievement Award.

His vast and ever-growing body of original material is marked by consistent intelligence, taste and emotional purity-which is why so many of his songs have been covered by other quality artists, a stellar list that includes the likes of Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Del McCoury, Graham Nash, X, Los Lobos and Bob Mould.

Recent years have yielded the release of multiple live performance documents including -Live in Providence, Austin City Limits, and 1000 Years of Popular Music.

Thompson has also worked in film and TV where he composed and performed the soundtracks to Werner Herzog's film Grizzly Man, as well as the recent Harlan Ellison documentary Dreams With Sharp Teeth. The brand new 4-CD box set release of Walking on a Wire, spanning Richard's career from 1968-2009, has garnered 4 and 5 star reviews across the globe.
