Dear Editor,

Thanksgiving , traditionally, is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude for the things we usually take for granted. While Americans celebrate by gathering at home with family or friends in the comfort of their homes, our service men and women overseas, are away from their families defending our country.

This year Fortuna businesses joined together with the United Service Organization and Avon, Inc. to give back to all the great military men and women serving abroad.

Many local businesses have donated care packages, so that each military person can have a few of the comforts of home, as well as some essential personal care items that are so hard to come by, such as: shampoo, deodorant, hand cream and lip conditioner.

The USO works directly with the Department of Defense to determine where the packages are needed the most. The USO's mission is to “provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services” to military personnel and their families. A part of the proceeds goes towards emergency relief funds, family activities and other programs that they provide for our troops.

This was a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude to our brave service men and women. We would like to offer thanks to every business that has given back this Thanksgiving.

Those taking part include: Six Rivers Property Management, Robert A. Zigler-Attorney, Lowes Furniture, Ferndale Jewelers, Horizon Business Products, Rain All Day Books, Bella Dona Salon, Arney's Office Supplies, Fortuna Pet Shoppe, James Darin Joaillier, Fortuna Fabrics & Crafts, Stefanie's Doggie Detailing, CuddlyBear Thrift Store, Forbusco Lumber, Campton Height's Market, Busted Knuckle Auto Repair, Fortuna McDonald's employee.
