Redtfeldt joined the Army Air Corps in 1942. He has over 4,300 fly hours as an Air Force navigator and bombardier. He was a navigator on B-17s during World War II and was shot down over Germany, becoming a prisoner of war during 1944-45. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War and flew in B-26 Night Intruders. Redtfeldt also served during the Vietnam War, ferrying aircraft to Vietnam and flying combat missions in C-123 assault transports. He retired from the Air Force in 1972.
He and his wife, Lucille, have been married 66 years and have three daughters, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. They moved to Fortuna two years ago from Lemoore, near Fresno. They have both worked as archaeologists in the Mojave Desert and he has done over 500 paintings, specializing in prehistoric rock art.
Patriotic Medley, a special tribute to veterans, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11 at the Veteran's Memorial Building on Main Street in Fortuna. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. with the ceremony commencing at 2 p.m. Following Redtfeldt's presentation, Betty Diehl will lead a medley of patriotic songs in a sing-along. She has conducted the Ferndale Community Choir for over 39 years.
Refreshments will be served by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Don Hicks and Richard Phillipsen will provide music for your listening and dancing pleasure. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Appreciation goes to the Fortuna American Legion for donating the building and to News Channel 3 for sponsoring the program.
