50s film epic 'Big Trees' showing in Arcata

Humboldt Beacon

Filmed in Humboldt County in 1952, “The Big Trees” starred Kirk Douglas as an unscrupulous timber baron who plots to take advantage of a new law and make millions off California redwood. Much of the land he hopes to grab has been homesteaded by a Quaker colony, who try to persuade him to spare the giant sequoias. Expert at manipulating others, Fallon finds that other sharks are at his own heels, and forms an unlikely alliance.

”The Big Trees” was filmed on location in Williams Grove near Eureka, and in the town of Orrick. According to sources, students from Humboldt State College played parts of religious colonists and sang in the choir.

The Humboldt County Film Commission sponors this showing of “The Big Trees” on Saturday, June 27, at 6 and 8 p.m. at the Arcata Theatre Lounge, 1036 G St., Arcata. Box office opens 15 minutes prior to screening. Cost is $3.
