California man suspected of killing small dog in dispute

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

HAWTHORNE, Calif. (AP) A Southern California man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after investigators said he stomped on and killed a family's small dog during a dispute.

The Orange County Register reported Tuesday that the suspect, Seth Estrada, had lived for about a year with Chuck Hayes, the owner of the 9-pound (4-kilogram) Maltese. Police in Hawthorne say Estrada attacked the dog after Hayes told the 22-year-old to move out. It wasn't immediately known if Estrada has an attorney.

Lt. James Royer says tells the newspaper that Estrada gave different stories about how the dog was injured, but a necropsy shows its injuries were not accidental. Royer says Estrada also told authorities that he previously killed three other animals.

Hayes says he will seek a restraining order against Estrada.
