Firefighter killed in crash in Napa area ID’d as Missouri volunteer

The fire fighter killed in a traffic accident in Napa County on Monday, was identified as 38-year-old Garrett Paiz, a volunteer firefighter from Missouri, Napa County Sheriff’s Office officials announced.

Paiz was involved in a fatal crash on Oakville Grade while driving a privately owned Water Tender.

California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation and Paiz’s body was escorted from the scene by Napa Sheriff’s deputies, Cal Fire, various law enforcement and National Guard units in the area.

“This is of course a very tragic incident. It affects all of us very personally when someone who is working with us to help contain a fire and control a fire is injured, or unfortunately killed,” Cal Fire spokesperson David Shew said to Bay Area News Group on Monday.

Shew declined to comment on whether fatigue from the nonstop firefighting effort contributed to the crash, but said it’s an element something fire officials are monitoring closely.
