Judge announced for photo exhibition

Southern California photographer Ted Gore, pictured here, will be the judge for the annual Humboldt Photography Exhibition. Entry day is July 19 at the Redwood Art Association Gallery, 603 F St. in Eureka, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

EUREKA >> A Southern California landscape photographer has been selected to judge the upcoming Humboldt Photography Exhibition, which offers more than $1,400 in awards.

The exhibition is the largest photography show in the county and will run from July 23 to Aug. 22. Any photographer or digital artist living in Humboldt County can enter work. Entry day will be July 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Redwood Art Association Gallery, 603 F St.

Judge Ted Gore founded and runs Area 51, a by-invitation-only critique group limited to 51 top landscape photographers. He has been published in Practical Photography and is a frequent contributor to 500px.com, an online photo community where his work is often top rated.

Gore, who says he fell in love with them, has focused on landscapes for the past two years. Taking photographs of beautiful places fits with his love for the outdoors and brings him much fulfillment, he said.

"I believe in a creator. Observing and capturing his artistry is what makes me tick. I am also a bit of a nerd, and love the technology we have available at our fingertips," Gore said.

He also loves pushing his camera to its limits, but does not let that get in the way of his creative vision, he said.

"I treat each image ... like a painting, carefully fine-tuning the light to create something that represents what I saw with a slight fanciful twist."

Gore works as a motion graphics designer and art director. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a chemical engineering degree, but developed his interest in graphic design during his last year there. He later studied at The Creative Circus Art School in Atlanta. He and his wife live in Los Angeles.

A "Meet the Judge" session will be held at 2 p.m. on July 21 at the gallery. Awards will be given out at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 2, just before Arts Alive! begins, at the RAA Gallery.

The annual exhibition is being underwritten by William Pierson. It is a collaboration of the Eureka Photoshop Users Group, Redwood Camera Club and Redwood Art Association. Membership in these organizations is not required to enter. Entry forms may be picked up at the RAA Gallery, Swanlund's Camera, Eureka Art and Frame, or online at www.redwoodart.us and www.eurekaphotoshop.com.
