Known by many as a founding member of the uber-famous electronic group The Glitch Mob, Venice-based dubstep and glitch-hop star Kraddy will return to Humboldt on Friday night for some bassy business at the Arcata Theatre Lounge along with lazerbass standout Bleep Bloop and Australian reggae and dancehall DJ Daneeka.
Nearing the end of yet another successful year as a solo artist, the hip-hop, hard-rock, glitch and dubstep fusing producer said one of the highlights of his summer was having the opportunity to play his remix of Rob Zombie's "Superbeast" in person for the filmmaking, metal legend in Southern California in July.
"I played it for him at a show we did at Comic-Con in San Diego," said Matthew Kratz, also known as Kraddy. "He really dug it and we are talking about working together again. That's amazing to me because I've been a huge Rob Zombie fan my whole life. I've heard all his albums and I know all his movies. So the opportunity to work with him is epic."
Released on Aug. 6, the 'Zombie remix LP "Mondo Sex Head" boasts production from the likes of Kratz, Photek, Ki: Theory and many others.
After watching his dark, anthemic solo-single "Android Porn" become a worldwide hit in 2008, Kratz amicably split from The Glitch Mob in 2009 citing "creative differences" and has since seen overwhelmingly positive responses to his 2010 EP "Labyrinth" and his 2011 album "Anthems of the Hero." He's currently touring in support of a brand new EP, the sinister and dance-inducing "Moment of Truth."
Released on Sept. 23, the new three-song set features the progressive, laser-glitch heavy title track, the trance-meets-hip-hop low-tempo dittie "Headsnap" and the chilled-out, trippy, world-hop finale "Water From The Sky." The EP is available for free download at kraddyodaddy.com along with his new radio-ready remix of Florence and the Machine's "Seven Devils" off of their 2011 LP "Ceremonials." The haunting, dub-fueled take on Florence and the Machine's song goes reverb-heavy on the vocals and repeat-heavy on the head-bobbing.
And next release for the Kraddy laddie?
"Coming up, I have a dub version of my 'Labyrinth' EP that was mixed by Grant (Chambers) of Heavyweight Dub Champion," Kratz said. "I've also been writing in different styles -- some melancholy electro-pop and some dubstep-metal madness. I've also been writing some wonky, left-field stuff. I'm not sure what will come out when."
Lately, the producer-performer has been jamming out to a wide variety of artists and genres that, he said, are affecting his material. A Canadian hip-hop megastar, a Compton rapper, a dreamy electro-rock band from France and a chillwave electronic artist from Georgia have all been featured on Kratz' playlists lately.
"I really like the newest Drake album ('Take Care')," he said. "The production on there is really nice. I heard a few tracks from the new Kendrick Lamar album ('Good Kid, M.A.A.D City'), too, that sounded great. I've also been way into the new M83 and Washed Out albums ('Hurry Up, We're Dreaming' and 'Within and Without,' respectively). Both are stellar. I love the songwriting and the ethereal vibe."
On Friday night, Kraddy will take on never-heard-by-Humboldt material as well as fan-favorites like "Android Porn," "Steppin' Razor," "Into the Labyrinth," "Black Box" and "No Comply."
'A good friend of mine told me she heard her 5-year-old son humming 'Android Porn' to himself while playing with his trucks," Kratz laughed. "He calls it the 'space song.' I thought that was pretty amazing."
Advance passes to see Kraddy, Bleep Bloop and DJ Daneeka on Friday night at the Arcata Theatre Lounge can be found at The Works, People's Records, DTA, Wildberries Marketplace and online at worldfamous.inticketing.com. Happy-hour food and beverage prices will be offered from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the 21-plus performance. Tickets will cost $20 night-of with doors opening at 9:30 p.m.
The show will likely sell out, so advance passes are a good idea for this one.
"I love Humboldt," Kratz said. "It's such a beautiful place. I always have so much fun when I play up there. I'm a card-carrying medical marijuana user -- let's get medicinal and dance our asses off!"
